Overview

The Evil Within ships with a forced 2.50:1 cinematic letterbox that can be disabled in options, but native ultrawide is still not supported by the engine: at 21:9/32:9 the game is pillarboxed with black bars and a narrow, non-corrected FOV. PCGamingWiki and the Flawless Widescreen repo (module present, last changelog update 2015-03-08) both confirm Flawless Widescreen is the primary working fix, with the community SUWSF GitHub patch and a separate PCGW FOV-changer tool as alternatives (SUWSF specifically claims to remove cutscene black bars, though I could not independently verify current maintenance of that GitHub release).

Patch history & verification

Initial verificationSep 22, 2026
Confirmed via PCGamingWiki Video section that ultrawide is listed only as 'hackable' with pillarboxing, and confirmed Flawless Widescreen has an active 'The Evil Within' module entry in fws_repo.xml (changelog entries from 2014-2015). Confirmed the SUWSF GitHub release URL is referenced by PCGamingWiki but could not confirm its current update cadence, so it is listed as an alternative rather than primary fix.
